Some basics of Trickjumping :D


Settings
  • As W:ET is based on the quake engine, you can use the "magical" fps numbers to slightly improve your jump distance:
    Set com_maxfps 43, 76 or 125 (or 333 <-- only noobs use that :p, jumps aren't designed for it, etpro limit is generally 125)
    Only use those values that you can get stable.
  • Set pmove_fixed 1 - simulates 125 fps, should be set to 1 by default on the FG-TJ servers
  • Play around with mv_sensitivity: You need to be able to do fast and large mouse movements, but don't set sens too high, you have to control your movement prefectly at any time!
  • To enable adrenaline permanent for current map you can use /nofatigue
    to enable it permanent for all maps use cg_ettj_nofatigue 1 (or Esc-ettjmod-settings-...)
  • You can save 2 positions using /save and /save2; you can load these saved positions with /load and /load2,
    I recommend making binds for save and load :D
    To reset your speed after loading use cg_ettj_novelbyload 1, recommend this one aswell
    save, load & novel can also be found in menu: Esc-ettjmod-controls-...
  • To skip jumps, you can use /jetpack, a great ettjmod feature
    to display some helpful commands: type /tjhelp in console
  • With cg_ettj_drawhud 1 you can enable a TJ-HUD that shows you if your mouse movement is correct or not
  • With cg_ettj_drawkeys 1 you enable some arrows around the crosshair: Spec someone who actually can trickjump to learn how and when to press which keys
  • Other less important though still helpful stuff like drawspeed, speedunit, ghosts,... can be found in Esc-ettjmod-settings/controls-...
    or in console cg_ettj_ + tab


Bunnyhopping
If you jump downhill just always press your jump-key right when you hit the ground: You'll keep jumping and your speed will increase - you're bunnyhopping now :p
Quake-style "flat ground jumping" isn't possible in ET, but was introduced with the AP-TJmod servers and c3peg4 also added it optionally to the ettjmod

Note: In the following I'll explain everything with the WASD-keys:
W = forward, S = backwards, A = leftwards, D = rightwards, oh and space = jump key
Also if I say walk I mean run, just aaaalways press the sprint button, you only have to release sprint when your skill increases and you begin to overjump (abbr: OJ) the easier jumps :D


Circle Jump
The Circle Jump is the basic jump to get over large gaps and the basic start-jump for any gamma-jumping.
You perform it like that (lefty/left-side):
  • You start walking along the edge with very little distance to the edge (only one or two steps) pressing W
  • Then you also press A
  • Exactly when you start pressing A also make a quite fast but also steady mouse movement of about 90°to the left
  • Now you should really stand at the edge and face the abyss in front of you ... don't stop here - this is the time to press space :p
  • In the air you keep turning more to the left so that you do all in all a turning of about 135° (but depends a lot on the jump how much you have to turn)
  • Of course keep W+A pressed all the time. You can also do everything with W+D for a right-side start
That's it ^^ Get your ass on the TJ-server to watch how it actually looks like - I also tried to display it in a little drawing:

Strafe jumping/Fullbeat
Strafe jumping is an improvement to bunnyhopping and required for "gamma" jumps.
It's a combination of mouse movement and pressing the right keys at the right time.
You start with a Circle Jump like explained above, then go on with strafing:
  • Always press W+sprint (+space only when you hit the ground)
  • You're not jumping just straight forward, instead you jump in "snake-lines", only this gives you speed!
  • Go left by pressing also A and moving your mouse to the left
  • Go right by pressing W and moving your mouse to the right
  • Switch between going left and going right at every single jump to gain a maximum of speed
    The best time to switch is right before you hit the ground
  • For the switching:
    • Change from pressing A to pressing D instantly!
    • Exactly when you switch the keys you also have to change the mouse-movement-direction simultaneously --> fast and precise nouse movement and timing
  • After the actual switching keep turning the mouse slowly, smooth and steady

Some additional info to strafe jumping:
  • Pressing the wrong keys, (e.g. A when turning mouse to the right) makes your speed decrease a lot!
  • If you have the correct keys pressed, but stop the mouse movement: Speed will stay constant
  • Only correct keys plus correct mouse movement increases speed
  • To decrease speed go off W or release sprint for a second
    To stop in the air/decrease speed a lot press S ^^
  • Up-Down movement has NO EFFECT, only left-right does!
  • IMPORTANT: For fullbeat/strafe: Start with small angles, the further and faster you go the more you have to increase the angle!
  • You don't have to switch left/right at every jump, if you're fast enough it's way more relaxing to just go the left for 2 or 3 (or even more) jumps, then a rough and fast switch to going right,...


Ice
On ice - to gain speed - it's the same thing like strafing just without jumping :D
Stay on the ice as long as possible to increase speed to a maximum.


Ramps
Nearly every second jump has at least 1 ramp.
Ramps give you a boost upwards so you can get over large distance gaps.
Generally, for best ramp usage, jump right before you hit the ramp; it also helps to strafe (fast) exactly at that moment.
But every ramp is different and needs different treatment :p (Depending on the angle of the ramp, the ramp size, the ramp shape, the distance and height of the following jump).
Sometimes you have to jump a little earlier, for halfpipe-style ramps you need to make one large, steady strafe while being on the ramp,...
Though jumping right when/before hitting the ramp works in most cases the best.


Airstrafe
If jumps have a big height difference between the single pads, you need to airstrafe.
Doing that properly really isn't easy:
While in standard gamma-jumps/strafe-jumps the switching with its fast mouse movement is the most important part,
now the slowly turning after having switched does the "trick":
Always keep turning the mouse, and move it steady, slowly and smooth :D
As your speed rises heavily while "falling" down you also have to increase the angle of mouse turning a lot while being in the air.
Often you also have to switch again in mid-air.
Hardly can be explained, you just need to get the feeling for it :p


Overbounce
In some maps - often after big height difference between two pads - the next pad is soooooo far away that you're askin yourself how to ever get there?!?
Than it's probably an overbounce jump. For overbounce you need pmove_fixed 1.
Overbounce (OB) works like that:
Jump any style you want just when you hit the ground you need to press space a little bit later than you do normally.
That gives you a lot extra speed (depending on height difference of the jump before).
Maps with a lot of OB: Feen_ob, Kraglejump 2, 999-tj_b1


Vertical Overbounce
Really cool thing - rarely to find in maps, you can do it in e.g. feen_ob and hankendless
For Vertical Overbounce (VOB) you need to bind +strafe to a key of your choice - you can also set it in Esc-ettjmod-controls-...
Perform it like that:
  • Jump/run over the edge
  • You need to have NO horizontal speed at all, easiest way to get this is jumping against a wall or in a corner
    In Esc-ettjmod-settings you can set drawspeed to horizontal speed
  • Release every movement key (WASD)
  • Press your strafe key and keep it pressed
  • Do NOT press jump when you hit the ground
  • Mouse movement: 2 ways
    • Either look more or less down when you fall and then move mouse upwards once you've hit the ground
    • or start looking to the side and move mouse to the left or to the right once you've hit the ground


Walljumping
Wallstrafe = Strafing against a wall :p
  • Stand next to the wall beside you.
  • Having the wall to your left start with a circle jump using W+A so that you "hit" the wall at first pad
  • Keep W+A pressed and keep brushing the wall
  • Angle you look towards the wall should be about 30° (from jump direction)
  • You'll gain much speed without even moving the mouse
  • Little mouse movements to the left give you even more speed
  • Little mouse movement to the right makes you slow down
  • If wall is to your right: It's the same with D instead A and mouse movement to the right :p

Jumpstyles

Everything in the first part of the tutorial was explained for fullbeat (FB)/strafe jumping.
So you should know now that fullbeat uses key combinations are W+A and W+D.
But there are a lot of other styles/techniques:


Halfbeat (HB)
Start with either left or right side circle jump, then:
  • For leftsided halfbeat use alternately W+A and only D
  • For rightsided halfbeat use alternately W+D and only A
  • Mouse movement: For HB you need smaller and only "one-sided" angles than in FB:
    The switching movement with mouse stays more or less left of the jump direction (for leftsided halfbeat)
  • Decrease the switching angle with increasing speed:
    Start with quite a big angle and the further and faster you go the smaller the mouse movement should be.
    That makes it easier to control at high velocity than fb - but still: never stop moving the mouse;
    although movement sometimes barely can be seen, you need it to get a decent speed.
For left-sided halfbeat: mouse movement should look probably something like that:

Invert
For invert you need - guess what - inverted mouse movement.
Keys to be pressed: Only A and only D, never W!
You can start with the standard circle jump, but there's a special inverted start that needs only A or D:
  • Stand next to the edge but look (nearly) backwards.
  • Press A and at the same time start with a ~180° turn by moving the mouse to the left
    (Or D and mouse movement ro the right)
  • Don't forget to jump at the edge
  • Keep the turning until you reach the first pad
Now, when you nearly reached the first pad and at this time finished about 180° (you look forwards now), start with the inverting:
  • Right before/when hitting the first pad keep turning really fast to the left BUT change to pressing D at the same time.
  • Go on like in strafe-jumping:
  • Switch fast when hitting the pads and always keep turning, only that you press A while turning to the right and D while turning to the left.
  • Switching angle is to be decreased with increasing speed! (like in hb)
    Start with a big angle and end with a tiny one


Inverted Halfbeat
Either W+A and S+D (left-sided)
or W+D and S+A (right-sided)


Nostrafe/Dualbeat
Only W, never A or D
Needs a lot of mouse turning
that's why you preferably switch after 2 pads here.


Nobeat
Either W+A and only D
or W+D and only A
without any mouse movement
--> hb without mouse movement :p
works only on easy jumps, but good to learn hb-key-usage


Others
Of course you can jump fullbeat/halfbeat/invert... not only forward but also backwards or sideways.
Thus it's possible to jump using pretty much every key combination you can think of ^^
Though for the harder jumps, most of these do not make that much sense :P

Nice Tutorial man :evil: Most important is to practice this on our Trickjump server ofc :lol: Mrmen map would be a good map to start with. And you can also learn allot from watching other jumpers doing their 'thing'
